City releases data on its Open Data Portal

25 October 2023

The City generates and holds a vast and diverse amount of data and views its data as a collection of public assets that when managed and organised, enables the City to be responsive to resident and business needs. The City has recently released key data on planning, disaster risk management and housing development on its Open Data Portal which is available to the public now.

The planning data which has been released speaks to height restrictions on properties and enables stakeholders in the planning and building development domain to engage on this complex topic. This release included planning data that speaks to Building Development Management (BDM) and Land Use Management (LUM) Case Points within suburbs as well as showing the location of special areas of historic value in Cape Town.

The disaster risk management data which has been released enables interested parties to better plan for disasters involving the Koeberg Nuclear power station and the housing development data speaks to approved planned and existing social housing developments in the City of Cape Town.

'We manage this data in a trustworthy and ethical manner and have made it available to the public via the Open Data Portal. In our efforts to create a modernised and capable government that benefits its residents and stakeholders, we will continue to make data available on this portal to embrace openness and transparency,' said the City's Mayoral Committee member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.

Some of the data available via the portal includes:

•        Spatial data

•        Operational data

•        Administrative data

•        Data collected from, or about residents and businesses

The Public can access the portal via Open Data Portal (arcgis.com).
